140 word Letter to the Editor

Letter to the Editor,

Citizenship and Immigration Canada’s poor administration of the citizenship process is arbitrarily withholding voting rights to hundreds of thousands of qualified, tax-paying residents. The 344,516 citizenship applicants caught in the CIC’s ballooning backlog and the tens of thousands of “anti-fraud” Residency Questionnaire recipients deserve a fair and timely path to citizenship.

Like an increasing portion of citizenship applicants, I received the dreaded Residence Questionnaire without explanation or warning. The unspecified suspicions of an unspecified official will leave my citizenship in limbo for an additional four years or indefinitely.

Canada has long enjoyed a reputation for good governance. This reputation is not strengthened by an opaque, poorly administered and seemingly capricious citizenship process rife with unknown delays. Qualified, long-time residents who have built their lives, families and careers here deserve better. Canada deserves better.

Sincerely,
